Hollywood has never lacked leading men who could captivate viewers with dramatic performances that depict them as suave romantics or dashing heroes, especially during the Golden Age of Hollywood when stars like Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Cary Grant graced screens. But in 1940, the fourth most popular star in the US was a foreign actor from Australia, and unlike other movie stars, he was more notorious for his pursuits off the screen than on it. In an era long before social media and TMZ, Errol Flynn represented the epitome of a swashbuckling playboy, with enough mystery and intrigue surrounding him and his background to fascinate even those who didn't see his movies. An article in Time magazine got to the heart of the matter in 1938 when it noted, "Of all the heroes of Hollywood, Errol Flynn has by long odds the greatest amount of non-phony glamor. His life has been as adventurous as any of the swashbuckling characters he has portrayed. At 18, he was a member of the English Olympic boxing team. At 19, he was master of an island trading schooner in the South Seas. He has chased head-hunters in New Guinea and 'recruited' blacks for British miners. Once he made $5,000 mining gold, got drunk and blew it all on a schooner, The Sirocco, which he sailed in the South Seas and wrote a book about (Beam Ends)."

Naturally, when he was at the peak of his powers both on and off the screen, Flynn frequently joked about his lifestyle and traded upon it for popularity, with comments like "I like my whisky old and my women young" and "Women won't let me stay single and I won't let me stay married." Not surprisingly, Flynn was just as fast and loose with his money, to the extent that he once asserted, "Any man who has $10,000 left when he dies is a failure."

Legends of Hollywood The Life of Errol Flynn (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Michael Gilboe Books

A very short and easy to read biography of Errol Flynn. That is the way it should be for most movie stars and this book serves the purpose. There are some short and pithy quotations by Flynn dispersed throughout the book and they tell us a lot about him as a person, other than the matinee idol that he was. It is a shame that so few of us are around who have seen him in action and a whole lot more who have never even heard of him. He was the quintessential colonial Briton who looked upon non-whites as inferior and that is his downside but he has partly made up for that by siding with the underdog in Cuba and openly supporting Castro against Batista in the late fifties. He could have done a great job in movies where he could be cast in a leading role in the adventures of Richard Burton, John Hanning Speke and even Pizarro or Cortez. On the whole enjoyable reading.

Legends of Hollywood The Life of Errol Flynn (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Michael Gilboe Books Reviews

I liked reading about the life of Errol Flynn. It is sad that his personal life was such the opposite of him in and out of camera range.
I am a HUGE fan of Charles River Editors books but I have to give this one only 3 stars due to the lack of editing on several pages; missing words, lines repeated, etc. It really took away from the flow of the book.
Not the story I expected. Basically a outline of his life and career.
Charles River Editors have always been noted for succinct ,but interesting bios of Hollywood Stars.
However , was disappointed in reading the"The Life Of Errol Flynn.". It was just an enumeration of the movies
starring Mr. Flynn. Instead would advise readers to read "My Wicked Wicked Ways " Errol Flynn's autobiography.
I have not seen many of Errol Flynn's movies and read this mostly to fill in my knowledge of early Hollywood films. It focuses more on the actor's films than on his life, but I did learn that he was a tragic and unusual person in the classic gifted alcoholic, self-destructive celebrity mold. It made me feel I should see more of his work on film. I would have appreciated even more information relating to his life.
Although this 52 page offering does little more than summarize his off-set misbehavior, it is apparent that Errol Flynn was quite the opposite of his on-screen persona.

It's a shame that Legends of Hollywood The Life of Errol Flynn could not, or at any rate, did not include more specificity in its allegations against a man who passed away more than 50 years ago.

I think this booklet is well worth the cost.
This book was somewhat meager on substance. One does get the general gist of Errol Flynn's life - that of a tragedy of monumental proportions. Here was a man that was very talented but decided to live a fast, hard life and it caught up to him quickly.

I am reminded of what the wise man said in Proverbs, "The way of the transgressor is hard..." Errol Flynn died at a young age (50), and yet was a very old man due to his wicked lifestyle (as admitted to in his Autobiography - My Wicked, Wicked Ways).
I was never a fan of Errol Flynn, and I think it's just because I've never seen him on film. I was born in 1963, and while I loved old movies, and still do, I was more of a Gene Kelly, Clark Gable and Cary Grant type of gal. But I'm going to have to watch a few movies of his now. He lived a full life of excess, and died way too young from it. What a waste.
